The Lightning is struck down

In true soloLOL fashion, I won't be autocrossing my car tomorrow at the WDCR event at Summit Point because the tow vehicle can't make it.

Karen was going to use the Lightning yesterday to meet up with someone to sell C4 Grand Sport rims she has had sitting around forever, backed the truck up in the driveway, and the brake pedal went to the floor.  She texted me about it, and when I got home, the master cylinder was empty, and there was a pool of brake fluid under the truck.

The hard line running along the frame on the driver's side has a section that has rusted away, so new brake lines are on order.

The Lightning has been the backup "racecar" over the years, and since there's no way I'm going to drive the Camaro to Summit Point, the new backup is the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek we've had since new.  Karen has actually autocrossed it once at a Boxerfest and said it's not that bad.  She even put the beat down on some kid there who had turbo'd his Crosstrek and thought he was going to beat a girl.  The brakes are actually really good, it does seem to handle OK (it's just an Impreza with a lift kit) but it only has 150hp* (I call it The Sloth-Trek) and seems kind of tippy.

So let's see, first autocross of the year gets cancelled.  Next autocross, the Camaro doesn't even make it on the trailer.  Next autocross, the car makes one run and the throttle cable pops off.  Next autocross, rain dumps on a sketchy course that doesn't drain, and again it's one run.  Now the tow vehicle can't even make it out of the driveway.  There's also the trailer bearing that fried one the way back from the dyno.  It's almost like "Groundhog Day" where Bill Murray was just trying to figure out different ways to die and ending up in his bed the next morning reliving the same shit.

* My first performance car was a 1992 Nissan Sentra SE-R with 140hp.  Front-whee-drive, revved to 7,500 RPM, but even though it would be down on horsepower to the Crosstrek, the SE-R was a whole lot faster.  Probably 500 pounds difference between the vehicles.

  1. I still remember the boiling PS fluid in the Lightning after a run long ago. And I enjoyed the SE-R mention. Remember being in the passenger seat at Summit and having a 924S pass you on the outside. Good times.
