Part II, into the Mach I

It's a C Prepared car. I left with click-bait on my last post . Rewinding back to the Cone Killer Classic where my car smoked and almost went up in smoke, there was still an afternoon session. I actually worked the first heat in the afternoon when I could have just bailed. Paul encouraged me to fold into his Camaro in an attempt to drive it in the afternoon heat. I tried to fit into his car a couple years ago, and with the seat position and rollbar, it was no bueno. I'm a little taller than him and have longer legs -- he's like a taller version of Mike "Junior" Johnson with more torso than legs. He said he made a couple changes since then and thought I might fit. I think he just wanted to laugh at me trying to pretzel into his car. After several minutes (I'm not sure, but maybe Paul was secretly videoing this), I did manage to fit in the car. But then he attached the steering wheel, which I think he got off a Kenworth, and there was no way I would be able to ...

I should have let it burn, part I

Unfortunately, where there was smoke there was fire. No, that's not tire smoke. But before I go there, I'll recap my latest autocross. Which was on Sunday in this at the WDCR autocross on the crop-circle course at Summit Point: Just driving a school teacher's daily driver. I hoped to drive Sam Vassalo's Club Spec Mustang since he's been offering a seat in it every time we see each other. But Sam Strano and Kevin Henry took the Mustang to the Finger Lakes National Tour and broke it. At least that's what I read on the internet. So Karen offered up her daily driver, a completely bone stock 2023 Subaru WRX. Oh wait, it's not stock: It's stock! Otherwise, stock shocks, stock rimz, stock tires (actually 200 treadwear Dunlops), stock sway bars. The alignment hasn't even been touched. I was hoping to use Sunday's WDCR autocross as a shake-down for the upcoming UMI Muscle on the Mountain to see if my changes affected keeping water temps down. It's only weird if it doesn't work. Fabbing something to keep air forced to the radiator. I also installed a new throttle body because Peter Florance suspected my fluctuating RPM issue was due to the blade not being centered on the throttle body I had -- an OEM LS1 unit that had been ported. The new throttle body was 92mm, so it will make big power now! CAMT ran in the second heat, which saw the beginning of rain for the first run, and then it didn't let up throughout the heat. Water temp was fairly stable at 180 degrees, so maybe the changes worked? I think? Anyway, five runs, all of them in the wet. I checked tire pressures before the heat started -- they were about one PSI below what I'd run them hot -- then didn't check the pressures after that.
