Do it clean.
(Never realized there were string instruments in this song!)
After last week's Pro Solo, it was back to local action with the SCCA's Washington D.C. Region in The 'Dorf at Regency Furniture Stadium.
As I left off, the car was struggling to stay under 210 in water temps at the Pro. I searched online for a plug-and-play solution with a fan and shroud, but nothing stood out.
Enter gorilla tape and thermal tape!
During the offseason, I had half-heartedly tried to fabricoddle a shroud. I didn't like how it was going, so I abandoned the project.
After last weekend, I re-enabled the project. Mostly using plastic sheet, it seemed OK, and I slapped it on before this weekend's autocross.

I made this myself! |
We drove first heat which has its positives and negatives. The positive is that we work second heat and can roll out after that. The negative is that we drive a green course in cooler weather.
It didn't seem like the fan shroud experiment would have ideal (WARM!) conditions. But the temps started heating up, and the grid workers decided to send eight cars at a time to the line. With five runs, the first four were OK, but readying for the fourth run saw water temps climbing above 200 degrees.
On that fourth run, I clocked a clean 37.0 and felt 36s were do-able. On the last run, Solostorm data showed I was quicker in a couple sections but slower in others, and I slowed to a 37.1.
With the water temp climbing, the idle was mysteriously around 1800 RPM after every run. It might be a throttle body issue. I sent logs to Peter Florance, and he said idle RPM is changing without any changes from the Megasquirt and the blade is closed. I have a ported LS1 F-Body throttle body, and Peter said the blades on those sometimes lose their center.
Off to spend more $$$!
The next event is another WDCR autocross on June 8, then it's off to UMI's Muscle on the Mountain.
