This is Josh West (of animated gif fame) losing a wheel in the middle of a run Sunday at FedEx Field. Instead of being upset/pissed/confused about losing a wheel, he is overjoyed because apparently the kart people have T-shirts made to hand out when one of them loses a wheel. Apparently this happens a lot. Ask me again why a shifter kart would be fun (to own and maintain all by yourself).

It came off because the three lug nuts came off. Danny Kao found one by the start, and Josh found the other two near where the wheel actually departed from the kart. (If you look closely just as the kart stops, you can see the wheel bouncing across the asphalt. See the blue canopy a little further away? The wheel bounced past that and finally came to rest. In a gutter.)

I can't believe I only discovered this site a few weeks ago.

On the way back from the Toledo National Tour, cruising along the Pennsylvania Turnpike (or maybe it was Ohio), the muffler literally came off Karen's black Camaro. It stayed attached to the car via an exhaust hanger, I pulled over to the side of the road, and Karen braved a hot exhaust to throw it in the back of the car.

This car doesn't like travelling. It has twice gotten flat tires on I-70 (once with Team WTF?! along to document everything), the muffler has fallen off before, and now it happens again. WTF?!

Like the "Fun with brake cleaner" story I posted last year, here's another true story from a few years ago (St. Patrick's Day 2006, I believe):

So I've been trying to sell my Firebird since Oct. '05. But ever since I changed the engine, the car hasn't felt right. I've run through everything I could think of and it only progressed so that it ran marginally better. Well it ran OK in that it drove fine and everything but it didn't feel faster than the (slightly) smaller engine I took out.

I was talking with Sam Strano about it yesterday, and he mentioned a "procedure" to set the timing, some procedure I had never heard about before in 4-1/2 years owning this car and something that wasn't in the Factory Service Manual (you people who don't know anything about cars can skip down a few paragraphs).

This morning, I followed this new procedure and set the timing. It was actually at something like -6 degrees when it should be at +6 degrees, so I of course adjusted it to the correct mark.
Naturally, I took it for a test drive.

I pulled out on Dorsey Road/170, which is a nice straight stretch of road the runs along the south end of BWI. There were some wet/icy patches on the road from last night, so I really couldn't open 'er up. I pulled up to a stoplight at the top of the first hill, and a black Dodge Intrepid pulled up next to me. The light turned green, and it was still kind of wet on the road ahead, so I just eased up to about 55 mph, 5 over the speed limit.

About a half mile down the road, I stopped at another stoplight, and the same plain black Intrepid was next to me again. I didn't pay much attention to it as I was scanning for some dry road in my lane ahead. The light turned green, and I again eased away. At about 40mph, the road was dry and there was nobody in front of me. I put the ol' Firebird in 3rd gear and mashed the gas. Oh yeah, the car felt great! I ran it through the top of 3rd gear and let off, even tapping the brakes to slow down to about 60. Kinda happy that the car finally felt great!

And then I saw the black Intrepid was right behind me. With red and blue lights flashing in the windshield.

Fuck.

The second-stealthiest unmarked police car I have ever seen (the stealthiest was the bright red late-80s Pontiac Grand Prix I saw last year on 295).

I pulled over to the shoulder and pulled out my wallet for my driver's license, and pulled the registration out of the center console.

The cop walked up to the driver's side door and the conversation went something like this:

Cop: I guess you know why I pulled you over.

Me: Yeah. (Handed over license and registration.) Honestly, I was just messing with the car, and I'm trying to sell it, and I just wanted to see if it ran OK. ... There wasn't anybody in front of me and the road was straight.

Cop: But there is a speed limit along here.

Me: I know.

And the cop turned and walked back to his car. I sat there thinking about how much the ticket was going to cost me. He probably wouldn't pop me for the maximum speed I reached (probably couldn't have gotten radar on me fast enough and didn't have much time to pace me). $200? Would it be that much? Maybe $125 or so. Oh crap, maybe it will be $300+. Maybe he'll pull up my record and see I haven't had anything other than one "fix it" ticket in almost 10 years. Should I take it to court? No, just suck it up and face the music.

You know, you're sitting there and everybody going past you is rubber knecking and you don't want to make eye contact but you just want to yell "What the fuck are you looking at? Pay attention to your own fucking driving!"

More than five minutes later, he walked back to the car and handed me my registration. He said, "Well, you don't have any points. I'll let you go with a warning" and handed over the warning ticket and my license. I said "Thank you" and tried not to act as happy as I was.

To top it all off, literally as I started typing all this, someone who had expressed interest in buying the Firebird called and made an offer. And I accepted! He said he can stop by tomorrow and get the car, and considering he's a friend of a friend, it's a 99% done deal.

In case you don't wander over to SCCA Forums, your 2010 A Stock National Champion (since Tony Savini didn't show) reasoned that he was four seconds slower than B Stock winner Marc Pfannopqrstuvwxyz (even though they ran the same day in consecutive heats on the same course) because of OPR getting dragged on course during course walks. No. Kidding.

Difference between Heat 2 and 3 was a course walk. Around 500 people walking the courses for 30 minutes getting all sort of crap on the driving line to be picked up immediately after by heat 3 drivers (that included two DML Lotuses driving everywhere picking and dropping stuff everywhere). I had a 2.5" wide continuous line of OPR on my front tires, removing my effective contact patch by over 60mm, or making my tires effectively 205 instead of 285.

Awesome. Ghetto Racer would be proud.

Clearing through some drafts of old e-mails (where I keep my important stuff), this is a true story from a couple years ago (hey an actual blog-like post) ... enjoy!

I had made plans to go fishing on Saturday with my friend Bryan (one of my few non-car friends). He showed up around 11 a.m. and we started loading my gear in his BMW X5 in my driveway. I noticed a kid (like, 18-20 years old) walk by on the street and linger near my mailbox. Dressed in slacks, black dress shirt and a backpack. I thought for sure he was peddling religion, which I was looking forward to considering I got the phrase "recovering Catholic" from Bryan.

Anyway, I couldn't ignore him any longer and made eye contact. "Is one of you the man of the house?" I said I was, and he went into some shpeel about how he's originally from Cleveland and he was trying to earn money for something, and he pulled out a spray bottle of this "amazing" cleaner that was only $9.99. It was safe for the environment because it wasn't harmful if swallowed -- he sprayed some on his fingers and licked them. "See, it's safe."

Blah blah blah, "So what kind of stains really trouble you most? Spots on your kitchen floor? Grime around light switches?" the kid asked.

"Oil!" I said.

"Oil?" he said with a puzzled look.

"Yeah, I have a bunch of spots in my driveway."

"OK, let me see them."

I walked in front of Bryan's BMW and sure enough, oil spots from some kind of GM product, I'm sure. The kid went to work on one of the spots. He sprayed the spot, started scrubbing it with a wire brush, sprayed some more, scrubbed some more, and yet, the spot was still there. He said something about the sun baking the oil into the pavement and it takes some work to get the spot out.

Perhaps sensing defeat, he started looking at the other vehicles in the driveway.

"Is that your car?" he said pointing at Karen's green Camaro.

"No."

"What about that one?" he said pointing at my SE-R.

"Yeah, that's mine."

"Damn, when was the last time you washed it?"

I had to think a bit and told him it had been about a month (of course not telling him that just after that I did a poor man's Karl Shultz on the car with clay bar, cleaner, glaze and wax).

So he wandered over and sprayed his miracle jizz on one of the SE-R wheels and started scrubbing. Meanwhile, I went in my garage and got a can of brake clean. I came out, and he pointed out how clean that section of wheel was. I sprayed brake clean on another part of the wheel and wiped off the grime.

"Wow, this stuff did just as good of a job, and it's $1.99 from Wal Mart."

He was running out of options.

"It can also clean spots off your car."

"OK," I said, "how about this one?" I pointed to a spot on the fender that has been there since I bought the car. I've done everything short of just sand paper and spray paint to get that spot out, and it's still there. So he sprayed and started working at the spot and started scrubbing. I found another oil spot in my driveway and sprayed it with brake clean.

Bryan seemed curious not about the kid's miracle jizz but the can of brake clean.

"What is that stuff?" Remember, Bryan is not a car guy.

"It's brake cleaner. It cleans EVERYTHING!"

"Where do you get it?" Bryan asked.

"It's $1.99 from Wal Mart."

"But can you drink it?" he said with a straight face.

"Well, uh, no ... but you can probably get high from the fumes."

"But you can't drink it."

"No, not really."

I think the kid finally gave up and wandered off.

Last year, members of the SoloAtlanta Region attempted to kidnap the Texas Spokes Ronald McDonald but their attempt was expertly thwarted before any aggregious (throwing out 50-cent words trying to sound smart and stuff) crimes were committed. The only bad thing that happened was an affliction of temporary blindness when some Spokes members saw some junk. Not everyone saw the junk, though, since there was not a lot of junk to see.

This year, two people -- not members of the (dirty) South region -- kidnapped Ronald and placed it in the Atlanta Region's compound in an attempt to frame those members.

Accusations, as well as a bicycle, were thrown. An alleged conspirator was identified and punished, but it turned out he was nothing more than a patsy.

Two weeks later, it has been revealed that the perpetrators were caught on a security camera committing the crime:

The wrongly accused conspirator (aka, patsy) launched his own investigation. soloLOL has obtained pictures of the primary pieces of evidence, Exhibit A (the shoes) and Exhibit B (the jacket with the silver reflective material) that positively identify one of the actual conspirators:
